Ahh, summertime!  A time when we seek hot times within a cool environment!  Lucky for those who live in El Paso, our local theaters offer some of the best entertainment of the year!  And when the sun sets, its time to party hearty while enjoying top performers from near and far. To ensure you don’t miss the best of the summer, our staff at Cantera Apartment Community in El Paso, Texas has selected some of their favorite things to do and see.

July 5 – 12
Hamilton
Plaza Theater

There are still tickets available to see this award-winning show this month. With accolades that include GRAMMY, Tony, and Oliver awards, plus a Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Hamilton is a must-see this summer.

Here’s a little insight from the theater’s website listing:

HAMILTON is the story of America then, told by America now. Featuring a score that blends hip-hop, jazz, R&B and Broadway, HAMILTON has taken the story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton and created a revolutionary moment in theatre-a musical that has had a profound impact on culture, politics, and education.

Now Throughout July 2023
Cool Canyon Nights
McKellingon Canyon Amphitheatre

There is no way anyone could be bored in El Paso in the summer months with the incredible line-up during Cool Canyon Nights presented by West Star. Throughout the summer, this is THE THING to do as the sun sets over the west.  Thanks to the support of West Star, admission is free. However, seating is limited, so be sure to arrive early and secure your spot!
Concerts begin at 6:00 pm on the EPCC Patio Sage, followed by the main act at 7:00 pm in the amphitheater:

•    July 6, 202 – Fire & Ice
•    July 13, 2023 – Radio La Chusma
•    July 20, 2023 – Windy City
•    July 27, 2023 – Fungi Mugle

July 28 – 29, 2023
Plaza Classic Film Festival
Plaza Theater

This film festival started back in 2008 with ‘a vision to celebrate our rich cinema history and rekindle the joy of communal film-going.”  If you have yet to sit back and take in the talents that lit up the screens years ago and into today’s trending film festivals across the world, you can right here in El Paso. It’s an ideal escape into the air-conditioned theater in the heat of the day and night in El Paso.
Below you will find snippets from the Theater’s website. Click here to see the schedule and select your seats!

July 28, 2023
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

The battle between good and evil continues in this fifth installment of the Harry Potter series. The wizarding community largely denies Lord Voldemort’s return, with the Ministry of Magic at its forefront.

The Wild One

Loosely based on a true story, The Wild One is considered the first real motorcycle gang movie and it made a star and icon out of Marlon Brando and his character, motorcycle gang leader Johnny Strabler.

Singin' in the Rain

A modest hit in 1952, Singin’ in the Rain has become legendary over its 70 years in existence. It is regarded by many experts and fans as the greatest musical film of all time.

Wayne's World

Two beloved characters who were first introduced to audiences in a series of Saturday Night Live skits make the leap to the big screen in this surprise hit starring Mike Myers as Wayne and Dana Carvey as his sidekick Garth.

Don’t forget to pack a picnic. This park is an ideal place to spend an afternoon with friends and family alike. Whether you have a dog or not, you will find that the following parks offer plenty of escape from everyday life. This month, we are showcasing some of our favorite parks that not only welcome dogs to roam free they are also perfect spots for a picnic in the shade or morning stroll.  All of which are just a short drive from our apartments in El Paso.
Argal Park
With one of the region’s largest parks to play with your pup, Argal Park has open space and fenced-in areas for dogs of all shapes and sizes.  There’s also a real nice walking path that wanders through the park.
Kids love it too as there is a nice, shaded play area with slides, swings, and then some!
Pavo Real Enhanced Spray Park
If you have yet to head to the Spray Park, this summer is the time to do so.  Your dogs will love you for it.  At Pavo Real Enhanced Spray Park is completely fenced and has a colorful fire hydrant shaped water spray feature. Dogs need to be older than four months to play in the Park and must be voice controlled, cleaned up after, legally licensed and vaccinated, and wearing a visible dog license.
Here’s more insight from their website:
Fido must be kept on-leash outside the gates, and owners must remove any harness, spike, pinch, prong, or chain collar from their dog before letting them loose to romp in the water. Dog owners must be at least eighteen years old and are limited to two pets per visit. Ten small dogs or seven large dogs are allowed in the Spray Park at a time. The Park is open mid-April through the end of October. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, small dogs are allowed from 10:00am to 12:00pm and 3:30pm to 5:30pm, and large dogs are allowed from 12:30pm to 2:30pm and 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, small dogs are allowed from 12:30pm to 2:30pm and 6:00pm to 8:00pm, and large dogs are allowed from 10:00am to 12:00pm and 3:30pm to 5:30pm.

Earlier this month, we showed you some of the top spots to take your pup to breakfast, lunch or dinner.  The blog was so popular we decided to stick to a good thing.  Below you will find more options to enjoy a summer meal with your entire family and friends by your side.

Whataburger
A fab place for Fido, family and friends, too, Whataburger welcomes everyone to their dog-friendly establishment.  See their list of “Signature Burgers’ built with tons of topping combinations like the Chorizo Burger or Avocado Bacon Burger. Not into burgers? No problem. Come in with a sweet tooth for their classic Apple Pit or good old-fashioned malt or shake. You can satisfy your sweet tooth with a hot apple pie or a cold shake and malt. A drive-thru window is also available if you don't want to tie your dog up outside while you go in to order.

Gringo
This may be the best spot in El Paso to pass the time with the entire family. Gringo Theory Patio Bar is super pet friendly.  The entire staff takes time to welcome your furry friend and offers water bowls to cool them off during our sweltering summer days.  Recently they added an enclosed Dog Park to their bar.  Think: classic cocktail, local brew, and happy puppies, too!
They also host a variety of some of the best Food Trucks in El Paso.

150 Sunset
Touting “creative food with a healthy twist,’ 150 Sunset is yet another dog-friendly establishment in El Paso.   While dining in their open patio or side patio with your pub, you can sit back and savor a classic Roasted Chicken entrĂ©e, Chicken Artichoke Pasta or our favorite for the big splurge, Beef Tenderloin.  Lighter bites are offered on the menu as well with appetizers, salads, soups and daily specials.

Along with their core services, they also also have a unique Gift Shop, offer in house and off-site catering, full wedding and event design and planning services and more.

The Hoppy Monk
For something out of the norm, head to The Hoppy Monk.  Boasting “a delicious variety of innovative pub eats and potent potables in a casual tavern style atmosphere,” you can feast on mouthwatering options like mac and cheese, tuna tostadas, mushroom melts, rabbit barbacoa tacos, wagyu strip steak, and bacon and egg burgers.
Wash down the goodness with a selection from the impressive lineup of craft brews from across the globe.
Check this out.  We found this on their website and thought you’d enjoy reading it as much as we did:
OUR “I DIDN’T REALLY LIKE THAT BEER” POLICY:

We strive to bring to you a beer menu, both on draught and in bottle, which is not your everyday ho-hum selection of every day ho-hum beers. These beers tend to be more expensive and harder to find due to their craft brewed, artisanal nature. We want you to step up and taste real, artisanal beer. However, we will not refund the cost if you simply “don’t care for your beer”. You can purchase a five-ounce taster glass of almost any  artisanal beer.

Where to take your dog off-leash in El Paso?

Stay tuned to next month’s feature on the “Best off leash’ parks in El Paso!

Every month we research new ideas to help you enjoy a full life at your apartment in El Paso.  And every blog that we produce is backed by our mission that is centered around you – living a wholesome living experience at Cantera..

With summer temps rising daily, we thought you might appreciate some top tips on how to stay cool in the summer heat.

Play in the Pool

Our first choice, of course, is to encourage you to enjoy the pool at our apartments in El Paso.  Whether you swim some laps in the morning, enjoy a full day in its cool waters, or plan a BBQ pool side in the evening, our pool and pool-side amenities are there for you and your family to enjoy.

Need ideas on  how to keep the kids entertained while you read your favorite book pool-side, there’s a great article on ActiveKids.com.  Read on to read more about pool games for your kids that include: Beach Ball Race, Ping Pong Madness, Sharks and Minnows, What Time Is It Mr. Fox , Coin Hunts, Floatie Races, and we must mention the oh-so-famous: Marco Polo!

Keep it Cool in the Kitchen

As noted above, feel free to use the BBQ to keep the heat out of your kitchen.  And instead of the comfy foods that we enjoy during our cooler month, swap those out for fresh fruit salads, scrumptious sandwiches, and of course … popsicles for dessert!  If you need more ideas on cool things to cook during the steamy summer months, take a look at this site that offers 50 options to keep your kitchen and apartment cool this summer.

Get Spicy

This deserves a paragraph all on its own.  As home to the best BBQ and restaurants in the USA (our opinion), order it HOT.  Yes, spicy hot!  We have learned this lesson from some of our neighbors who noted that some of the spiciest foods come from South America where the temps are tops most of the year.  Although spicey foods may feel hot at first bite, and we start to sweat, the air on our damp skin cools down our body’s temperature.  So here’s another tip on how to keep your body cool.  Click into this story published on FourSquare re: The 15 Best Places to Eat Spicy Foods in El Paso.

Keep All Things Cotton

From your sheets at night to your summer wardrobe, cotton is always our top pick to beat the heat in El Paso.  We found a good article written by Voila ~ Wellness Made Simple that explained why cotton is good for you, and the environment too.  Here are some highlights:

  1.  Breathability In hot and sweaty seasons, as the body perspires, cotton fibers absorb the moisture and release it on the fabric, so it evaporates. This makes cotton breathable. It also allows for better air circulation while drawing heat away from the skin and keeping the body cool and dry. Because it is absorbent it removes liquid from the skin, like a towel, according to Cotton Incorporated.
  2. Comfortable – Cotton fibers (especially organic) are one of the only natural fibers that cause almost no allergic reactions and don’t irritate human skin. Cotton’s hypoallergenic nature and moisture-wicking properties won’t aggravate dry skin or cause allergic reactions, even in people prone to skin problems like rashes or eczema.
  3. Stylish cotton is not only the best choice for t-shirts, PJs, and jeans! You can find beautifully made and stylish cotton outfits from top designers these days. Great looking garments that will not only make you look good but also make you feel good while wearing them no matter how hot it gets!

But wait, there’s more! Watch our next edition for more ways to keep cool during the summer months in and around your apartment in El Paso.

Perfect for those who seek paranormal activity

Here’s an idea for very unusual Date Nights.  Head on over to the Concordia Cemetery and take part in their popular Ghost Tours.  According to their website, there are “over 60,000 souls resting within its walls” and noted as “literally a city of the dead… with a host of ghosts-in-residence. Some of the spirits are said to include the fascinating Lady Flo (‘the lady in white’) as well as the notorious Old West gunslinger John Wesley Hardin.”

Those who are more in-tune to paranormal activity have talked about “unexplained sounds such as the hoofbeats of horses or the laughter of children have been reported coming from the cemetery at night.”

Here’s more insight and you can learn more at https://www.ghosts915.org/.  “Bring your cameras and become the Ghost Hunter as you learn about the history, mystery, and lore of this historic landmark. Meet at the Yandell entrance to the cemetery at 8:30pm. Ages 10 and up. Children MUST be accompanied by an adult over 21. Proceeds to benefit Concordia Cemetery for preservation and restoration purposes. The Paso Del Norte Paranormal Society is a 501(c)3 non-profit.”

Jamie Munguia

UTEP Don Haskins Center
A Middleweight battle of the best

If you have never experienced a live boxing match, this month is your month to do so.  Make time to head over to the UTEP Don Haskins Center to watch Middleweight contender Jaime Munguia (36-0, 29 KOs) return to the ring.  Follow this link to get all the specifics for this much-anticipated return of the boxing world.

Looking for some good news?  Look no further.  We are dedicating this blog to YOU to help every day be a less stressful day.

All you need to do is cross-off some time for yourself each week and find time to dive into these helpful tips for a stressless tomorrow.

Start with a Soothing Cup of Java
We like to refer to this tip as “me time.”  Time to sit back and plan your day ahead with your favorite cup of coffee in hand.  Both of which can slow you down before life gets too fast.  And, did you know that an 8-oz cup of coffee has been scientifically proven to boost your mood?

Get Outside in the Sunshine, Early!
Before things heat up too much in Texas, we like to get out of our apartment at Cantera in El Paso to catch some sunshine and early morning fresh air.  In addition to more ‘me time’ before your day gets too busy, you can naturally add some Vitamin D to your daily routine to boost your mood while you feel good, too!

Be Thankful
While you are out in the cooler morning air, take time to think about all the ‘good’ in life.  Enhancing your ‘gratitude attitude’ does wonders for your soul.   Got a little more time?  When is the last time you hand-wrote a thank you note – or just a letter to someone who might be lonely?  Taking time for others is always good for the soul.

Download Some Tunes from the Past
Remember ‘the good old days?”  Remember them again!  Our favorite source for selecting good tunes from good times past is Pandora.com.  Once you have found a perfect selection, and have stored them for fun times ahead, why wait?  Get up and dance.  There is something about dancing that will always super-charge your mood.

Hydrate
I  know we hear this all time, and with good reason.  We saw yet another‘scientific study, and time after time, the results are still valid.  Drinking water has been proven to boost our mood and remove tension and headaches that come with dehydration.

Play Catch, or Catch-up
There is something about playing with kids that will set anyone’s mood straight.  Right now, it is the height of baseball season.  Surely there are kids in your apartment community in El Paso that are just dying to get outside and toss the ball around.  No kids?  Then catch-up with some long-lost friends.  Invite them over for a (social-distancing) BBQ – there is plenty of room around the pool at Cantera apartments in El Paso.

Peace Out
When your day is almost complete, find some quiet time to reflect on what you have accomplished since that first cup of java.  So many times, we rush around from sun-up to sun-down we rarely take time to check in on ourselves.  Statistics continually tell us that a little meditation or just a little downtime works wonders to prepare us for a good nights’ rest.

Sleep tight!

Luckily for all of us at our apartment community in El Paso, Texas, our city does not lack the options for enjoying ice cream in the summer months – or year-round!  With the temperatures warming up, we thought this would be a perfect time to post some of the best ice cream spots in El Paso.

As you read the list, perhaps you and your friends can safely head out to enjoy some of the best of summer in the great outdoors – with ice cream, frozen custard, sorbet, or a cool gelato in hand.

One more note:  be sure to click into each company’s website to see their hours and take-out options during our challenging times.

Super Churro Split

115 South Americas, Suite B-3
El Paso, TX

Known throughout the city for their “Super Churro Split” and Dunked Churro, we understand why the owners continue to set their high standards to serve up the “the best churro” in El Paso.  With over 11, 500 customers “liking” their Facebook page, we can only assume they all love this spot, too!

Social Ice
10978 Montwood Dr, Ste D
El Paso, TX 79935, US

While searching the web for this post, the testimonial for Social Ice stopped us in our tracks:
“The fried ice cream funnel cake with extra strawberries is bomb! Also did the tres leches with fresh mangos.”

To get you on your way, just take a moment to click into Social Ice in El Paso’s photo gallery, and you will be in the car moments from now.

Menchie’s
17701 Gateway South Boulevard
El Paso, TX

From their Fro-Yo Cakes to their fresh selection of flavored yogurt, the list offers some of the yummies flavors in El Paso. And, they partnered with third-party drivers like DoorDash, Grubhub, Postmates, and Uber Eats to get your frozen yogurt delivered conveniently to your door!

Aurora Rolling Ice Cream
8320 Dyer St
El Paso, TX

If you have a large party to please, head to Aurora Rolling Ice Cream.  Their list of options will certainly please the most discretionary tastes.  Just look at this testimonial to back our case:

“First time to this place, and it was the best rolled ice cream we have had in El Paso. I am recommending this place to anyone and everyone on bliss. They also give a military discount.”

Fahrenheit 32
2500 N Mesa Street
El Paso, TX

Whoever came up with the name of Fahrenheit for an ice cream shop certainly is confident in their product.  For some of the most delicious rolled ice cream in El Paso, do not miss this hot spot.  Our favorite at Cantera apartments is YOLO i.e. You Obviously LOVE Oreos!”

Haggen-Dazs
8889 Gateway Blvd West
El Paso, TX

When there is a celebration to be had, Haggen-Dazs takes our top pick for the top spots to enjoy ice cream in El Paso.  Their product is hard to match and worth the price you will pay for some of the creamiest ice creams you will ever enjoy this summer, and all-year-round!

No matter where you choose to enjoy your ice cream this summer, we always like to bring some home to enjoy pool side with our family at Cantera apartments in El Paso!

With summer in full swing, we’re dedicating our June blogs to some of our favorite things to do and see in and around El Paso this summer.  If you need more ideas, just stop in our office or give us a call at our apartment community in El Paso

Eat Drink and Be Merry

In the Segundo Barrio, don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy some of the best pan dulces in the state at Bowie Bakery.  Locals will note they are as colorful as the neighborhood’s many murals.

Love Enchiladas?  We do too and often frequent H & H Carwash for their absolutely delicious Red Cheese Enchiladas.

Other yummy stops in El Paso for great local food include L & J Café which is just across the street from the Concordia Cemetery.

For what may call ‘unorthodox comfort food,” there’s no better place to get a great variety at a great value. At Ode Brewing Company we love their friend Buffalo-style cauliflower, pork tortas, and don’t miss those homemade brews, too!

Shop Til You Drop

As noted in a recent Texas Monthly article:  “While downtown’s El Centro shopping district is a bargain-seekers mecca, the west sides’ new TI:ME at Montecillo development is a ‘hip nucleus” of indie shops tucked in to shipping containers.

Two of our favorites include Mother of Pearl Vinyl and Chuco Relic which has a great selection of goods made by local artisans.

Sightsee in Your Hometown

If you have yet to spend some time at Chamizal National Park, it’s time you do.  You’ll step back in time and learn all about the 1964 land swap that settled a dispute and cause the shifting of the Rio Grande.

Be it by foot or by tram, every view in and around the Franklin Mountain State Park is worth the time invested with family and friends.   For a little exercise and fresh air, we prefer a hike up the Ron Coleman Trail; for a gentler way to the top, take the famous Wyler Aerial Tramway gondola that goes to Ranger Peak.

Just outside the El Paso Museum of History is a showcase within itself.  Make some time to soak up the talent with the DIGIE display.  This interactive digital tapestry of photos and narratives tells the tales of two nations.
