How To Pick Out A Perfect Pumpkin
Throughout our colorful city, you don't have to drive far to find a pumpkin patch when you live in El Paso, you will find plenty of places to pile the kids in the car to go on a road trip for the day to hunt for the perfect pumpkin!

So, how do you pick out the perfect pumpkin? It depends on the purpose. If you have plans to host a pumpkin carving party, focus on the large, uniform shapes; they are best for carving creative creatures. And here's an excellent tip to keep your artistry looking healthy well into the fall season: wipe the fruit off with bleach and water.
Here's the general rule for the perfect pumpkin pie: the smaller and heavier, the better. While picking out pumpkins, be sure to get a few squashes to make one of the richest and most delicious recipes for  Squash Soup from HowSweetEats.com.
Speaking of yummy and fun ideas, why not throw a party? It's a perfect time to get the neighbors together before the snow flies. No need to spend time doing it yourself. Make it a potluck by the pool for a perfect way to start the season.

Go Leaf Peeping Near El Paso!
Fall is the perfect time to take a road trip to see the changing of the colors. And when one lives in El Paso, the concept provides the perfect opportunity to pack up the kids and take a road trip or short vacation.  
Here are three of our favorite places to take in the grandeur of the fall season.

Ruidoso  
If you have never wandered through the ghost town of Ruidoso, October couldn’t be a better time to do so.  Although you may not see any ghosts, we promise you will see some of the most spectacular colors of Mother Nature.  From town, make time to drive north on Pinto Canyon Road into the Chinati Mountains. For a sneak preview, watch the colors unfold on this Instagram post. 

Cloudcroft 
This quiet village is surrounded by the Lincoln National Forest, where the colors of fall are perfect for picture taking right now!  We like to make this trip a weekend escape and bring our mountain bikes and fishing gear to complement our leaf-peeping adventure.

Guadalupe Mountains National Park 
As the home to eight of the ten highest peaks in Texas, Guadalupe Mountain National Park provides an abundance of opportunities to seek out the colors of the season. Depending on how long and far you might want to hike or bike, there are excellent vantage points from which to view the surrounding Chihuahuan Desert landscape and colorful sights.
Speaking of which, did you know that those vivid leaf colors are actually hidden from us throughout the summer months? As the sunlight decreases and the colder temps arrive, chlorophyll production in the leaves begins to slow down and reveal the true brilliant reds, golds, and classic deep orange colors of fall.

Earlier this month we offered a list of things to do with your kids and family in El Paso.  As there are so many great things to do and see, we are continuing this list of favorites of our family at Cantera Apartments in El Paso.

Pack a Picnic, Head to a Park

There is not enough time in one month to visit all the beautiful parks in El Paso.  However, there are plenty of days ahead as you ease into Autumn to pack a picnic, pick some parks, and park it – unplugged.

The City of El Paso and Recreation Department has more than 220 parks located throughout the city. Most of these parks have a paved pathway within the park which can be used for walking, jogging, rollerblading and bicycling, or just hanging out in the shade.

El Paso Municipal Rose Garden – Bring your stroller for the little ones and take in the magnificent color-filled lush gardens at the El Paso Municipal Rose Garden. Embark on your own adventure amongst 500 varieties of roses and over 1,900 rosebushes. Raised beds, waterfalls, walking paths, and a Koi Pond, all span over 4 acres creating a memorable experience for all.

Rio Bosque Wetlands – This is a 372-acre City of El Paso park managed by UTEP's Center for Environmental Resource Management.  It’s where we like to go to relax or help rejuvenate the environment through their professionally organized programs.  Take a look at their activities and for questions and more information, visit their website:

• Community workdays where volunteers can help maintain trails, natural communities, and water flow
• Birding tours where participants can see some of the 257 bird species that have been identified in the Park
• Introductory tours where the community can learn about wetlands, wildlife, and the importance of natural areas and freshwater
• Community events such as the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife annual BioBlitz, El Paso City Nature Challenge, and more

Western Playland

This is a place where one could turn back time to the days of the good old-fashioned amusement parks.  It is here where one can literally go upside down as often as you’d like on the newly installed Fireball. Its impressive 48-foot height is enough to encourage you not to eat before you ride! The ElLoco 360 is on that list, too.  Make a full day of it as every ride makes us feel like a kid again! 

For the little ones, they will love the Granny Bug ride, U-boats and U-Cars.  Got teens? It’s a playground of playgrounds with WipeOut, Drop Zone and Rockstar at the top of the list for this adventurous group. And of course, you really need to check out Jurassic Giants– their newest addition for family fun.

El Paso Museum of Art

On the complete flip side of the Western Playground is a delightful and educational option for indoor fun.  Thanks to the team at the Museum, they always have something planned for kids and the whole family, too.  Make your plans now to gather around a campfire to celebrate El Paso’s 150th anniversary with a ghostly twist! Come one come all on August 26^th at 7:30 pm for spooky night of ghost stories and local legends at the El Paso Museum of Archaeology.

Owners of one of El Paso’s more popular courses promote the Butterflied Trail Golf course as “A "must-play" for all who seek challenging yet enjoyable play, Butterfield Trail’s natural beauty and unique design will inspire an unforgettable golf experience.” This is one of our favorite courses for many reasons. First, it is loaded with history. Each hole was named after a different stop on the historic Butterfield Overland Mail Company route, which operated for three years in the mid-1850's, carrying mail and passengers from Missouri to San Francisco.

Carved out of the Chihuahuan Desert, the three courses at Painted Dunes Golf Courses offer every option within any golf course design in the West. Officially noted as a “Championship” course, its architects Ken Dye and Jeffrey Brauer have received accolades from the industry’s most acclaimed media including Golf Digest, the United States Golf Association, Texas Golfer, and the Dallas Morning News who touted the courses as “preeminent golf facilities in Texas and the Southwest.”

Take A Hike

If your New Year’s Resolution included a focus on fitness, McKellingon Canyon is an ideal location to get out to enjoy our beautiful weather before it gets too hot! Anywhere you go within McKellingon Canyon are opportunities to take a brisk walk or run a few miles among some of the state’s most stunning terrain. As one of the top spots for those who train all the time, this section of the Franklin Mountains is a favorite route for the ultra-fit or those who seek a scenic stroll on a spring or early summer day.

Plan a Paddle

Take a paddle with pop on one of the many lakes and streams that wind in and around our city. Or better yet, pick up a gift certificate at our local sports shops to learn how to paddle board or kayak on the scenic lakes throughout El Paso.

Picnic With Pop

Whether you enjoy a lovely glass of wine, or not, take your Dad to Zin Valley Vineyards this month. Every Sunday they offer wine tastings and live music wrapped with a view of the vineyards in every direction. Want to really surprise him? Pack a picnic. Take A Hike
With the 27,000-acre (about 40 square miles) Franklin Mountains, there are over 100 trails to take a short trek or day-long walk. Another option is to make your reservation to camp out for a night or a ‘stay-cation’ close to home. Bring your bikes, climbing gear and hiking boots. If you are into geocaching, this is a top spot to head out for a day-long adventure.

Stroll Around San Jacinto
An icon of our magnificent city, San Jacinto Plaza is another place to take Dad out to enjoy one of El Paso’s parks. In the center, take a selfie with Dad by the fiberglass sculpture by Luis Jiménez which honors the city’s colorful past – when real alligators graced San Jacinto Plaza sits in the center of downtown! Today, it is wrapped with places to play or put your feet up for a few. Take a stroll over the bridge or park on a bench for a game of chess, play a little ping-pong, or stop in for refreshments and a snack at the café.

Unplug and Unwind

The Chamizal National Monument and surrounding trails are ideal places to slip away for the day. As their website notes: Chamizal is more than just an urban park to recreate or enjoy a quiet afternoon. These grounds are a reminder of the harmonious settlement of a 100-year boundary dispute between the United States and Mexico. We celebrate the cultures of the borderlands to promote the same mutual respect that helped to diplomatically resolve an international disagreement.

Get Out and About

It’s the perfect weather right now for a bike ride, stroll or hike within some of El Paso’s most magnificent parks. You can see our top picks below.

Hueco Tanks State Historic Site

One of the best ways to enjoy Hueco Tanks is to spend more than a day and plan a camping trip for a weekend or weeknight (it’s a little quieter then). This will give you plenty of time to enjoy the park’s natural and cultural history. More than 200 species of birds have been sighted at Hueco Tanks. Look for birds in the self-guided area or on the monthly birding tour.
The campground has restrooms, hot showers and a dump station. For reservations, call (512) 389-8911. Reservations are limited to three days; you may be able to stay longer if a site is available.  Camping check- ends one hour before the park closes. There is no late entry.
And then go climb a rock (or more!) Experience world-class rock climbing at Hueco Tanks! Choose from self-guided or guided climbs. Call (512) 389-8911 to make a reservation to climb. 

Chamizal National Memorial

Here’s another fun AND educational option for moms who love history and the great outdoors.  At the Chamizal National Memorial there are plenty of walking paths throughout the entire area and picnic tables are there as well (hint: surprise Mom with a Mom’s Day Picnic! _  

The Chamizal National Memorial is uncommon among more than 400 other national parks, both as an urban park and because of its full performance theater, which seats almost 500 people. This indoor theater and an outdoor amphitheater are stages for sharing the park’s history and borderland culture during various major events and other programs throughout the year.

Franklin Mountain State Park

Throughout the year, the Park offers a variety of interpretive tours and events.  Whether you choose to participate or not is completely up to you.  Just last week we took on one of the Park’s toughest treks. We started at the W. Cottonwood Springs trailhead and hiked (a very strenuous) eight miles up to North Franklin Peak and back.  The views were worth every breath!  

Later this month, they are hosting another one of their very popular Aztec Cave Tours.  This hike is a moderate 1.5 miles. It begins with a gradual incline through a well-maintained switchback trail to wide open vistas to the west. The return trip travels down over scree, or rubble, proving to be challenging for some.  Reservations required; to reserve your spot, call the office at (915) 444-9100.

Rock climbers come from all over the world to be challenged by our rock-strewn walls, caves and canyons. In fact, Hueco Tanks State Park & Historic Site is one of the country’s premier bouldering destinations.
Mountain bikers call El Paso the ultimate retreat for testing their human-powered prowess. And even the novice outdoor fan always finds the treasures that Mother Nature provides, year-round.
When you combine the beauty of the state with 300 days of sunshine and temperatures ranging from above 40 in the winter and just lovely average temperatures within the 80s in the summertime, you can be guaranteed to spend more time outdoors than in.

With our classic Western hospitality, we welcome new neighbors to El Paso every day. There are several reasons why we are seeing this influx.  The cost of living is very reasonable and manageable. Move.org actually ranked El Paso as one of the (75) cities in the USA for its affordability. Pair that with Niche.com who placed us at 18th for our low cost of living, and you have two very credible resources touting our appealing financial status.
Throughout the Sun City, and beyond, you will appreciate our ‘tax friendly’ status:  there is no state income tax here. 
Although we are a big city, our crime rate is impressively low. The U.S. News & World Report rates the property and violent crime rates here as lower than average for similarly sized metro areas. Similar rating systems have documented stats that ranked El Paso as the fifth safest large city in the country!

This is a private, family-focused club infused with history, superior service, a list of amenties that one would expect from a first-class operation.
Stretching over 125 acres, Coronado offers an 18 hole ‘classic mountain design’ course which means you will experience plenty of challenges throughout its rolling terrain. In addition to the course, the Club is complete with ‘five-star’ outdoor and indoor dining experiences, lighted tennis courts, a heated swimming pool with ‘private’ cabanas, and is a favorite for the kids … with a 15 foot waterslide to entertain them all day long.
Brides and grooms find the Coronado’s personal service and pristine setting a perfect spot to tie the knot!

Painted Dunes Golf Courses
Carved out of the Chihuahuan Desert, the three courses at Painted Dunes offer every option within any golf course design in the West. Horizon Golf Club
Located just 13 miles from the heart of El Paso, Horizon Golf Club (in Horizon City, TX), is yet another fine option to get outside and get into the game of golf. Developed initially at Emerald Springs Golf and Conference Center, and rebranded in 2013, this all-inclusive golf facility provides membership options with access to 18 holes for golf, a driving range, and swimming pool as well. 
Before or after your game, we recommend a tasty meal at their Moonlight Bar and Grill!

Lone Star Golf Course
With over 7,000 yards to test your game of golf, the Lone Star Golf Club in El Paso, Texas providing challenges at every level. A bonus is the courses beautiful setting among some of the region’s oldest Oak, Pine, Willow, and Mulberry trees. There are also three lakes and 22 bunkers to test your patience within the course’s 18-hole design. Dr. Marvin H. Ferguson, ASGCA, in 1977. 
As best noted on the course’s website: “Golfers will experience slight elevation changes and equally encounter numerous opportunities to unleash monster drives on our greens measuring up to 6,700 yards. Our qualified maintenance crew, led by Superintendent Marland Singleton, beautifully maintains our plush grounds. “
Ascarate ~ El Paso County Golf Course
With 300 days of sunshine, the odds are in your favor for enjoying one of our favorite golf courses in El Paso, Texas. Known as one of the ‘best golf values,’ this course is ideal for families who want to get outdoors for a fun day on the links. It offers 27 holes to test every level of talent. 
Their “main” 18 holes stretch 6,579 from the Blue Tees and hosts a Par 71. Locals will warn you about the ‘back 9” where water is either your friend or foe on five of its holes … affectionately named “Hell’s Corner.”
What is cool about this course is that it has been around forever – and often is enjoyed by generations of families who appreciate time on the links year after year.
