Top Tips to Get Kids Ready for Back-to-School Success

  |     |   Family, Tips

As summer winds down, many families right here at Cantera apartments in El Paso are preparing for the return of school routines. While buying supplies and new clothes are important, helping children to transition mentally, physically, and emotionally can make the start of the school year much smoother.

We asked our families at Cantera apartments in El Paso for their personal advice, and here’s what they said:

Re-establish a School-Year Routine

One of the biggest challenges after summer break is adjusting to earlier mornings and structured schedules. About two weeks before school starts, bedtime and wake-up times begin shifting closer to the school schedule. Consistent sleep is essential for children's focus, mood, and learning ability. Reintroducing regular mealtimes and daily routines can also help make the transition feel less abrupt.

Read Every Day
Summer reading is one of the best ways to keep young minds active. Encourage children to spend at least 15 to 20 minutes reading each day. Let them choose books that match their interests, whether it's adventure stories, graphic novels, science topics, or biographies.

Organize School Supplies Together

Rather than managing all the shopping yourself, involve your children in selecting and organizing their school supplies. Let them help label notebooks, arrange backpacks, and create a designated homework area at home.

Talk About Goals and Expectations

The start of a new school year is a great time to discuss goals. Ask your child what they hope to learn, accomplish, or experience during the year. Whether it's making a new friend, improving grades, joining a club, or trying a new activity, setting goals helps children feel motivated and gives them something positive to work toward.

Be Available for Family Conversations

The back-to-school season doesn't have to be stressful. By gradually rebuilding routines, encouraging learning, and creating positive conversations about the year ahead, families can help children start school feeling prepared, confident, and ready to succeed.

Make Time for Kid Time!

With temperatures still in the toasty range, plan a picnic by our pool at our apartment community in El Paso. Spread the word, make it a potluck and toast to a great school year ahead!
