Re-establish a School-Year Routine
One of the biggest challenges after summer break is adjusting to earlier mornings and structured schedules. About two weeks before school starts, bedtime and wake-up times begin shifting closer to the school schedule. Consistent sleep is essential for children's focus, mood, and learning ability. Reintroducing regular mealtimes and daily routines can also help make the transition feel less abrupt.
Read Every Day
Summer reading is one of the best ways to keep young minds active. Encourage children to spend at least 15 to 20 minutes reading each day. Let them choose books that match their interests, whether it's adventure stories, graphic novels, science topics, or biographies.
Organize School Supplies Together
Rather than managing all the shopping yourself, involve your children in selecting and organizing their school supplies. Let them help label notebooks, arrange backpacks, and create a designated homework area at home.

1. El Paso Zoo & Botanical Gardens
This is a family favorite year-round, but summer brings special programs like keeper chats, animal feedings, and splash pad play zones. Kids can explore zones like Asia, Africa, and the Americas, meet giraffes up close, and cool off at the Hunt Family Desert Spring water playground.
Located just north of the city in Anthony, this playful adventure world is perfect for families seeking relief from the Texas sun. Toddlers can splash safely in the Little Rio Grande while older kids race down the Tornado and Kamikaze slides. You can even grill your own food in shaded picnic areas.
3. Insights El Paso Science Center
For curious minds, the Science Center offers hands-on exhibits focusing on science, technology, engineering, and math. Summer camps and workshops let kids build robots, explore fossils, and understand desert ecosystems—all while having fun indoors – all with air conditioning and tons of fun for the little ones.
The Zone in the Upper Valley is classic family entertainment: go-karts, bumper boats, mini golf, batting cages, and an arcade. It’s affordable, open late, and a hit for birthdays, day trips or just for getting the kids out and about.

One of the standout events each April is the El Paso Science Festival. Scheduled for April 18–19, 2026, the festival features hands-on exhibits, live demonstrations, and interactive activities designed for kids and adults alike. It’s especially popular with families because it encourages curiosity and learning through play, making science both accessible and exciting. The event continues to grow each year as one of the city’s premier spring attractions.
Love food? You’ll love this! The Taste of El Paso Festival, happening on April 25, 2026, is a must-visit for anyone interested in the local culinary scene. This all-ages event brings together food vendors, live entertainment, and great all-around things to do in El Paso in April.
That same weekend, adults looking for a lively social scene can check out the El Paso Margarita Festival. This event features margarita tastings, live DJs, and food vendors. If you have yet to attend one of their games, this is the year to do so. You’ll be hooked like the rest of us! Kids LOVE nights at the part as well as they can cheer on their favorite players and, of course, sing the classic 7th Inning Stretch tune: “Take Me Out to The Ballgame.”!
If you are looking for a little more culture, El Paso has that too. For example, Día de los Niños, Día de los Libros takes place on April 25, celebrating children, reading, and community through interactive activities and educational programming. It’s a meaningful and fun event that reflects the city’s strong cultural identity and focuses on family.

Ahhh, El Paso in April. Just the sound of it makes one want to pack up the kiddos and head out to enjoy the great outdoors!
To give you some ideas that have been ‘kid-approved’ and ideal for families with all ages, we checked with a few families here at Cantera Apartments for Rent in El Paso, Texas.
Here’s a full list of things to do within our amazing city and outskirts that blend adventure, culture, and kid-friendly fun.
With temperatures comfortably in the 70s and 80s, spring is one of the best times to explore everything El Paso has to offer without the intense summer heat.
One of our favorite things to do with the kids is to pack a picnic and head to the Franklin Mountains, where there are plenty of opportunities for family-friendly hikes. You don’t have to be an experienced hiker to enjoy it either—there are plenty of short, manageable trails and scenic viewpoints that are perfect for kids. Pack a hat, bring water and turn it into a mini-adventure.
For a more relaxed outdoor day, head to one of the city’s many parks. Ascarate Park is a favorite among the residents here at Cantera. The park’s large open spaces gives you an immediate feel that you have left the city life. It’s where kids can run freely while parents unwind. Or get more adventurous, rent some pedal boats or play “Marco Polo” in the pool!
No family outing is complete without a visit to the zoo. The El Paso Zoo is a must-do, offering a mix of animal exhibits, a splash pad, and even a train ride that younger kids will love. It’s easy to spend an entire morning here, especially when the weather is as pleasant as it is in April. Be sure not to miss the Wildlife Amphitheater. Funded by the 2012 Quality of Life bond funds, the state-of-the-art Amphitheater is a place for Zoo guests to engage and learn in a whole new way through animal encounters, educational programs, concerts, and much more!
