“Tis the season to spoil all your senses as El Paso fills the air with holiday cheer.  From Santas to sparking lights to shopping until the stockings are stuffed, our family at Cantera apartments in El Paso has a full list of fun for you!
No matter where you go or what you do, we send our best wishes for a safe and memorable Christmas and Hannukah to come!

Light up the Night!
El Paso is not shy when it comes to decorating the city in all directions!  There are so many spots to take in the sparkling nights throughout our festive city.  Here’s a list of our favorite places for a perfect ‘date night’ or family outing.

  • Eastridge Neighborhood has always been known as one of the ‘must see’ spots during the Christmas season.  It’s magical in every term of the word with some of the most spectacular displays of lights in El Paso.  We like to walk the blocks and found that parking on Deby Lewis is a good spot to do so.
  • San Jacinto Plaza in Downtown El Paso is a great place to get holiday photos amid the lit-up displays. There are also spin scooters you can rent to enjoy a ride around the Downtown area.
  • Ascarate Park is one of the many places to be this holiday season. At the top of the ‘must see and do’ list are their annual “Lights on the Lake” display. On December 11, bring your four-legged family members to their annual “Santa Paws Pet Walk.”
  • Sun City is another top spot to capture the magic of the holidays.  It’s a perfect place to gather the whole family to capture our annual photo in front of their 60-foot Christmas tree! And it’s always a treat to tune into KISS-FM to listen to classic songs while driving along the colorful streets.
  • Last but never least, the lights to see in El Paso are in the Lower Valley at Speaking Rock Entertainment Center.

Seek out Santa!
Here are some highlights for where to find Old’ Saint Nick this month.  Be sure to call ahead or check the shopping center’s websites for the most up-to-date times and locations. Some also suggest you make a reservation or bring non-perishable food to donate to those who need it most.
Many of them also offer special activities during the month, including special times for special-needs children.
No matter where you go, be sure to thank the elves who make this happen every year!
The recommendations below come from the popular ElPasoMom.com website.  For a full list of where to find Santa in El Paso this year, click into this link.

Santa Magic Photo Experience at Sunland Park Mall
Pre-reservations are encouraged with walk-up visits welcomed on a first-come basis.  For more information, visit the Mall’s website.
Pre-booking your Santa Magic photo experience is encouraged. Walk-up visits are available as space permits at participating locations. Sensitive-friendly Santa times are available too! Find out more details here.

Santa Photo Experience at Cielo Vista Mall
Here’s a good spot to take children who aren’t quite sure about Santa.  They have special times set aside to ensure each child has a merry experience this year.

Shop and See Santa, Too!
Meet Santa at Wonderland’s Cabela’s. Advanced reservations are required.

Bassett Place
Stuff those stockings with gifts from Bath and Body Works, and see Santa right next door, too!

El Paso Winterfest
Any day of the week during December through the 21st, Jolly Ole St. Nick will be ready to greet your little ones at Winterfest.
To experience more of the magic in El Paso this season, tune into our next blog this month.

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, it’s time to get your planning underway. To help you have a fun and festive celebration, our family at Cantera apartment community in El Paso is sharing our top tips to ensure your Thanksgiving is the best one yet.
And from our family to yours, we wish you a happy and healthy holiday season to come.

Set Your Table First
This is the perfect way to get in the mood for the fun to come.  Start a week before the holiday to gather the goods and all the utensils you will need for the big feast.
Whether you are setting the table for a few or the whole clan, here are some perfectly simple ideas to make a statement that the holiday is underway.
If you still have a few gourds or (uncarved) pumpkins, place those first in the middle of the table. Apples and Pears work well to add more color.
When it comes to the place settings, you have your option from formal (China), to casual (Everyday dishes) and for the easiest of all, paper plates – which come in lots of festive designs at your local craft store or Costco.

Create Your Menu, Now.
No need to stress throughout the month; now is the time to plan all the parts from ‘soup to nuts.’  Right now, grocery stores throughout El Paso are starting their Thanksgiving sales. This is always the perfect time to shop and save.
If you are planning to fix the entire feast by yourself, you can start this week. Factor ahead make-ahead dishes that freeze well.  The Pioneer Woman website has 37 options that look delicious.  Take a peek now and get prepping!
If your schedule is already overwhelming, we suggest you head to one of the many Trader Joe shops in El Paso for store-bought shortcuts for Thanksgiving Dinner

Engage Your Guests
Quite often, our guests and family members will ask “can I bring something?”  When planning the menu, earmark some ideas to answer, “yes!”
A simple list may include:
•    Appetizers
•    Salad
•    Dinner Rolls
•    Dessert
•    Beverages
•    Ice

Buy The Bird!
Once you have a good headcount, plan to serve ¾ to 1 pound of bird per person.  If you want leftovers (and who doesn’t!), count up to 1 to 2 pounds of Turkey per person.
Shop for the best sale, yet do remember you get what you pay for.  You may see brands that offer a super deal, yet they don’t always have the best product.
You can freeze the bird until a few days away. Just remember, thaw it in the refrigerator, not the countertop.

Check Cleaning Supplies
Nothing can ruin a holiday dinner more than red wine on a white tablecloth or carpet. We always have white vinegar and salt on hand and never hesitate to have a bottle of “Wine Away” close by as well.
Here are some excellent tips to stay ahead of spills this holiday season. This Stain Removal Chart that is posted on RealSimple.com is a super reference to have this holiday season, and year-round.  We actually printed this out and it’s hanging in a closet in our kitchen!

Plan on “Downtime” for YOU!
We like to give ourselves a pre-dinner day off, and suggest you do too.  There’s no doubt you deserve it because of all the planning and preparation.
And from our family to yours, we wish you a happy and healthy holiday season to come.

Whether you are a country music fan or not, here’s a concert for all to enjoy. Parker McCollum has had one of the biggest breakout years of any country music newcomer. His drive to be on-stage in front of fans doing what he loves has made McCollum the consummate performer.
Parker Yancey McCollum was born in Conroe, Texas. His inspiration for country music included some of our favorites, too:  Willie Nelson, Buck Owens, Geoge Straight and Porter Wagoner to name a few. Throughout his childhood, he played the violin and learned to play the guitar at the age of 13.  It was all uphill for his career at that point.
Today, he has over a million followers on his Instagram site and for all the right reasons.

To help you ease into the Autumn season, our family at Cantera apartments in El Paso is sharing some of their top ideas on what to do during the fall months in Texas.
Want to know how to pick out the perfect pumpkin and where the best spots are for leaf peeping this fall? Read on!

How To Pick Out A Perfect Pumpkin
Throughout our colorful city, you don't have to drive far to find a pumpkin patch when you live in El Paso, you will find plenty of places to pile the kids in the car to go on a road trip for the day to hunt for the perfect pumpkin!

Beth El Pumpkin Patch
La Union Maze
El Paso’s Farmland
Mesilla Valley Maze

So, how do you pick out the perfect pumpkin? It depends on the purpose. If you have plans to host a pumpkin carving party, focus on the large, uniform shapes; they are best for carving creative creatures. And here's an excellent tip to keep your artistry looking healthy well into the fall season: wipe the fruit off with bleach and water.
Here's the general rule for the perfect pumpkin pie: the smaller and heavier, the better. While picking out pumpkins, be sure to get a few squashes to make one of the richest and most delicious recipes for  Squash Soup from HowSweetEats.com.
Speaking of yummy and fun ideas, why not throw a party? It's a perfect time to get the neighbors together before the snow flies. No need to spend time doing it yourself. Make it a potluck by the pool for a perfect way to start the season.

Go Leaf Peeping Near El Paso!
Fall is the perfect time to take a road trip to see the changing of the colors. And when one lives in El Paso, the concept provides the perfect opportunity to pack up the kids and take a road trip or short vacation.
Here are three of our favorite places to take in the grandeur of the fall season.

Ruidoso
If you have never wandered through the ghost town of Ruidoso, October couldn’t be a better time to do so.  Although you may not see any ghosts, we promise you will see some of the most spectacular colors of Mother Nature.  From town, make time to drive north on Pinto Canyon Road into the Chinati Mountains. For a sneak preview, watch the colors unfold on this Instagram post.

Cloudcroft
This quiet village is surrounded by the Lincoln National Forest, where the colors of fall are perfect for picture taking right now!  We like to make this trip a weekend escape and bring our mountain bikes and fishing gear to complement our leaf-peeping adventure.

Guadalupe Mountains National Park
As the home to eight of the ten highest peaks in Texas, Guadalupe Mountain National Park provides an abundance of opportunities to seek out the colors of the season. Depending on how long and far you might want to hike or bike, there are excellent vantage points from which to view the surrounding Chihuahuan Desert landscape and colorful sights.
Speaking of which, did you know that those vivid leaf colors are actually hidden from us throughout the summer months? As the sunlight decreases and the colder temps arrive, chlorophyll production in the leaves begins to slow down and reveal the true brilliant reds, golds, and classic deep orange colors of fall.

Earlier this month, we shared a list to start this season off right.  The list was so well read that we decided to continue the trend.

To ease you into the Autumn season, our family at Cantera Apartments in El Paso are sharing some additional ideas to prepare for the changing of the season.

Try Canning!

After you have selected some of the seasons’ finest fruits, it’s time to savor and save the flavors for those holiday feasts to come. From plums to peaches to all the prunes in season, preserving those seasonal favorites is a classic way to spend a fall day.

To get you started, we found a super simple website that lays out the basics of canning from the folks at SeriousEats.com.

Some of the best recipes can be found at BallMasonJars.com.  Some of our favorites that are a little out of the ordinary yet ideal for fall feasts include:
Habanero Apricot Jam

Carrot Cake Jam

Spiced Tomato Jam

And this ‘must-make’ seasonal favorite: Apple Butter

Make an Apple Pie

While we are on the subject of easing into Autumn, the seasonal aroma of a fresh baked apple pie is sure to set the scent that fall is in the air.  We have found that some of the best recipes for fall flavors are on TasteofHome.com; not just for the recipes, yet for the history and research that their team goes through to ensure each recipe is as close to perfect as it can be.

And just when you thought you only needed ONE recipe, the website offers 25, yes 25, recipes for the perfect apple pie.

Get a Head Start on that Halloween Costume

Although Halloween is a month away, some of the best values for Halloween costumes can be found right now.  Here’s a quick list of top spots to find the largest selection of ready-to-wear costumes in El Paso:
Spirit Halloween

Party City – The Fountains at Farah

Party City – El Paseo Marketplace

If you’re feeling a little more daring, hit the thrift or consignment shops to get your creative juices flowing.
Estella’s Thrift Shop

Second Chance

Family Thrift Center

Girl Bye Vintage

Ride into the Sunset

Soon, the expansive lands of El Paso will be overflowing with the colors of the fall season.  And as soon as those temperatures cool off, it’s the perfect spot to head into the hills on horseback.  If you have yet to experience El Paso on horseback, this company offers one of the reasons to head to the trails this season.
El Paso Valley Trail Rides and Horseback River Rides

Nestled in El Paso’s beautiful Upper Valley, El Paso Valley Trail Rides will take you on a private guided stroll between its pecan orchards and the magnetic Rio Grand River – with no horseback riding experience necessary. They strive to offer a safe and memorable experience and provide “a lifetime of memories on horseback.”

Here’s a review from one of their guests: This was such an amazing experience. I wanted to find something that my kids would enjoy but would also be relaxing for me and my husband. The staff/owners and even their doggies were so sweet and made us feel at home. The views were breathtaking and the stories they shared were memorable.

Earlier this month we offered a list of things to do with your kids and family in El Paso.  As there are so many great things to do and see, we are continuing this list of favorites of our family at Cantera Apartments in El Paso.

Pack a Picnic, Head to a Park

There is not enough time in one month to visit all the beautiful parks in El Paso.  However, there are plenty of days ahead as you ease into Autumn to pack a picnic, pick some parks, and park it – unplugged.

The City of El Paso and Recreation Department has more than 220 parks located throughout the city. Most of these parks have a paved pathway within the park which can be used for walking, jogging, rollerblading and bicycling, or just hanging out in the shade.

Here are two of our favorites, and for a full list, visit El Paso's Parks and Recreation website right here.

El Paso Municipal Rose Garden – Bring your stroller for the little ones and take in the magnificent color-filled lush gardens at the El Paso Municipal Rose Garden. Embark on your own adventure amongst 500 varieties of roses and over 1,900 rosebushes. Raised beds, waterfalls, walking paths, and a Koi Pond, all span over 4 acres creating a memorable experience for all.

Rio Bosque WetlandsThis is a 372-acre City of El Paso park managed by UTEP's Center for Environmental Resource Management.  It’s where we like to go to relax or help rejuvenate the environment through their professionally organized programs.  Take a look at their activities and for questions and more information, visit their website:

  • Community workdays where volunteers can help maintain trails, natural communities, and water flow
  • Birding tours where participants can see some of the 257 bird species that have been identified in the Park
  • Introductory tours where the community can learn about wetlands, wildlife, and the importance of natural areas and freshwater
  • Community events such as the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife annual BioBlitz, El Paso City Nature Challenge, and more

Western Playland

This is a place where one could turn back time to the days of the good old-fashioned amusement parks.  It is here where one can literally go upside down as often as you’d like on the newly installed Fireball. Its impressive 48-foot height is enough to encourage you not to eat before you ride! The ElLoco 360 is on that list, too.  Make a full day of it as every ride makes us feel like a kid again!

For the little ones, they will love the Granny Bug ride, U-boats and U-Cars.  Got teens? It’s a playground of playgrounds with WipeOut, Drop Zone and Rockstar at the top of the list for this adventurous group. And of course, you really need to check out Jurassic Giants– their newest addition for family fun.

El Paso Museum of Art

On the complete flip side of the Western Playground is a delightful and educational option for indoor fun.  Thanks to the team at the Museum, they always have something planned for kids and the whole family, too.  Make your plans now to gather around a campfire to celebrate El Paso’s 150th anniversary with a ghostly twist! Come one come all on August 26th at 7:30 pm for spooky night of ghost stories and local legends at the El Paso Museum of Archaeology.

Summer (and the heat of summer) is not over yet!  So, it’s time to continue the fun before it’s Back to School time in El Paso.

We polled our family at Cantera Apartments in El Paso about their favorite things to do with the kids by their side – in a cool environment. And now we are sharing this list with you!

El Paso Zoo

No summer is complete without a trip to the Zoo! With the hot days of summer still ahead of us, head to the Hunt Family Desert Spring that offers a splashing good time for all. This interactive park overflows with water features to keep you and yours cooled off all day long. From the tower sprays to the spray tunnels and then some, it’s a great way to keep the laughter going throughout the afternoon.

Licon Dairy

Here’s another fun spot with tasty food, too! For over 65 years, Licon Dairy has been producing high quality milk, cheese and other dairy-based products.  Throughout that time, they have continued to give back to our community.  Instead of just coming to their shop, make time to take the kids to their petting zoo. It is here where you get to enjoy the company of their exotic and farm animals, too. Be sure to pick-up a flyer about their Halloween event on October 15th.  This all day event will offer a free Magic Show, Pumpkin Painting and more festive fun for all.

Adventure Zone

So much to see and do at the Zone!  Within this expansive playground for all ages, you can cool off around the waterfalls, fountains and streams then head to the Go Kart Track to feel the breeze as you zip around the course.  They also have El Paso’s only 36-hole mini golf course and plenty of new adventures within their renovated AZ 2.0 Adventure Zone.

 X-Zone

Leave it to El Paso to have more than one “Zone” to keep the kids active before it’s time to go back to school.  There are two X-Zones; one on the east side and one on the west side. All of which offer a crazy-fun list of activities where it’s nice and cool – with cool things to do. Our favorites? The Obstacle Course, Super Slide and Ninja Warrior Zone!

El Paso Public Libraries

When it’s time to chill out, remember that your local libraries offer quiet time events throughout each week.

The free programs are available and open to the public on the same days and times at all library locations.

· Family Story Time: 4:30 p.m. every Tuesday

· Conversational English: 5:30 p.m. every Tuesday

· Preschool Story Time: 11 a.m. every Wednesday

· Citizenship Classes: 5:30 p.m. every Wednesday

· Teen Hangout: 4:30 p.m. every Thursday

· Computer classes offered at all library locations on a flexible schedule

And that is just the start of our favorite things to do with kids in El Paso.  Tune into our next Blog where we will continue to share our list of adventures for kids of all ages!

Earlier this month, our staff at Cantera Apartment Community’s favorite things to do while keeping cool during the steamy days in July.  With the Plaza Classic Film Festival such a big deal in El Paso, we kept the theme and now present the films on tap for the end of the month.

July 29, 2023
Plaza Classic Film Festival
Plaza Theater

Shrek 2
A sequel that is nearly as strong as the original film, Shrek 2 takes us back to the swamp for another rollicking round of post-modern wit that continues to playfully poke fun at the animated fairytale genre.

The Philadelphia Story
Three of Hollywood’s greatest stars came together for one of the best romantic comedies ever. Spoiled socialite Tracy Lord (Hepburn) is all set to marry aspiring politician George Kittredge (John Howard).

Whale Rider
Set in a Maori coastal village in New Zealand, the Whangara people believe they date back 1,000 years or more to a single ancestor who escaped death when he rode to shore on the back of a whale.

Rebel Without a Cause
The ultimate teen drama makes a long-requested return to the Plaza Classic. In his most famous role, the iconic James Dean is Jim, the troubled youth who has just moved to Los Angeles and is struggling to fit in at a new school, battling with his out-of-touch parents, and having scrapes with the law.

West Side Story (2021)
Steven Spielberg’s energized take on the 1961 movie, itself based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, is set in 1950s New York and focuses on lovers Tony and Maria, whose star-crossed romance appears doomed by the surrounding bigotry.

Love & Basketball
Is all fair in love and basketball? Monica (Sanaa Lathan/Kyla Pratt) and Quincy (Omar Epps/Glenndon Chatman) search for the answer throughout this film. Introduced as 11-year-old neighbors, with equal passion and skill for basketball, their initial love/hate relationship progresses into friendship.

Sha'Vonne
Sha’Vonne was born into a musical family, singing gospel and R&B. She was influenced heavily by Michael Jackson. Sha’Vonne is a worship leader and has served as a main worship leader at Hillsong family church in El Paso for 11 years.

Prince: Sign 'O' the Times
The Minneapolis wunderkind followed up his first album without the Revolution with a lengthy world tour that boosted sales in Europe but didn’t move the needle in the United States, where critics raved, but sales were poor.

Dazed and Confused
It’s not the original stoner comedy (nods to Reefer Madness and Cheech & Chong), but it is a definitive stoner comedy about the ‘70s, and it’s the movie that put Texas filmmaker Richard Linklater on the map, made a star of hunky Texan McConaughey and introduced his signature phrase, “Aw’right, aw’right, aw’right.”
See you at the movies!
